Chemical Foaming AgentsㆍMicrocapsule Foaming Agents
Introduction
Dongjin Semichem, a globally-recognized foaming agent manufacturing company, has been producing foaming agents since 1967 and is continuously developing new products. UNICELL, Dongjin Semichem's unique brand name for chemical foaming agents and foaming catalysts, is recognized internationally for its excellent quality and accounts for approximately 30% of the global market share.
UNICELL foaming agents are added to plastic or rubber and thermally decomposed or expanded at specific temperatures and pressures for specified durations to form fine cellular foam. This foam is structurally lightweight, thermally insulating, soundproof, elastic, and shock-absorbing. Accordingly, the material has a wide variety of applications, such as automotive and building interiors, shoes, wallpaper, flooring, packaging, and aviation components. UNICELL foaming agents are also expected to reduce the usage of major raw materials such as plastics and rubber. UNICELL foaming catalysts, which are either urea- or zinc-based, accelerate the chemical decomposition of foaming agents, thereby increasing production yield and lowering energy usage.

Main Products
- ADCA : UNICELL-D series
- Azodicarbonamide (ACDA), currently the most widely used foaming agent for plastic and rubber in the world, is produced in particle sizes of 2 to 25 micrometers. As a non-toxic, self-extinguishing substance capable of safe storage and shelf-life, ADCA generates large amounts of gas for material expansion and meets all of the requirements for a high-quality chemical foaming agent.
- Hydrazide : UNICELL-OH, UNICELL-H, UNICELL-BSH series
- DONGJIN SEMICHEM's hydrazide products, p,p’-oxybis (benzenesulfonyl hydrazide), p-toluenesulfonyl hydrazide, and p-benzenesulfonyl hydrazide, are widely utilized for their non-toxic, non-staining, and non-discoloring properties as well as their effective nitrogen gas release upon foaming. Thus, these products are most often applied as foaming agents for rubber and PVC plastisol.
- DPT : UNICELL-G series
- The chemical n,n’-dinitrosopentamethylene tetramine is one of the most cost-efficient and oldest foaming agents in use today for plastic and rubber applications.
- High-temperature Foaming Agents : UNICELL-TS, UNICELL-5PT
- The foaming agents p-toluenesulfonyl semicarbazide and 5-phenyltetrazole foam at higher temperatures relative to other chemical foaming agents. With little danger of pre-foaming, they are widely used for the foaming of acrylonitrile butadiene sytrene (ABS), rigid PVC, polyamide, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and other plastics that are processed at high temperatures.
- Inorganic : UNICELL-C series
- The UNICELL-C series, an inorganic foaming agent, is used as either a foaming or nucleating agent for plastics such as polypropylene, ABS, polystyrene, and polyethylene. Unlike organic foaming agents, UNICELL-C decomposes endothermically and does not cause thermal damage due to latent heat. In addition, the product meets FDA standards and can be used for food container applications.
- Expandable Microsphere : UNICELL-MS series

The thermally expandable microcapsule or microsphere is a physical foaming agent that expands with heat. Expandable microspheres, which have a core-shell structure of foaming agent at the core surrounded by a polymer shell, expand up to five times in diameter when heated to appropriate temperatures to form extremely small, but independent bubble cells.
Accommodating various customers' individual process needs, the UNICELL-MS series offers a wide range of products suitable for processing temperatures from 100 to 220 ℃ and can be used in textile, paint, wallpaper, and shoe sole injection applications.
- Expanded Microsphere : UNICELL-HMS series
- The UNICELL-HMS series is produced by expanding UNICELL-MS microspheres to form hollow particles. Ultra-lightweight with a density of 0.02~0.04 g/cm³, the UNICELL-HMS series has various industrial product applications, including leather, toy clay, shockproof tape, and insulation paint.
- Polymeric Bead Microsphere : UNIBEAD series
- As spherical polymeric beads, the UNIBEAD series is characterized by its uniform particle-size distribution and imparts light-diffusing properties upon application. The UNIBEAD series is used in paints and cosmetics to produce highly effective functional products.
- Eco-friendly Foaming Agents
- Dongjin Semichem's foaming agent R&D center has been focusing on the development of eco-friendly foaming agents for social and economic value creation. Another primary research area is the development of improved ADCA-based foaming agents that reduce the amount of formamide and ammonia released during decomposition relative to those used in the industry today.
- Hydrazine hydrate

As a raw material for water treatment, Hydrazine Hydrate is used for boiler pipe cleaning and power plant water treatment.
Other applications are in agriculture, pharmaceutical-related uses, and in the manufacture of foaming agents, polymerization initiators, etc.
